Mishima-shuku

Mishima-shuku was one of the busiest post towns among the 53 stages of the Tokaido during the Edo Period. Many travelers stayed in Mishima as it took a whole day to reach the mountains of Hakone. This resulted in the town having many inns. In the early Edo Period, the Izu magistrate’s office was placed on the current city hall site. It later became the Mishima Jinya, the cornerstone of Izu’s control. In the north of Mishima-shuku, spring water from Mt.Fuji welled up and crossed the road in many streams. Mishima-shuku has long been known as a city of water.
