Shirasuka-shuku

Although Shirasuka-shuku was originally located by the sea, it was moved to a plateau due to the tsunami damage caused by the Hoei Earthquake. Shiomizaka, one of the most scenic spots on the Tokaido, is a steep slope that climbs to the plateau. The scenery depicted in numerous ukiyo-e prints and songs is still a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean spreading out in front of you. In the diary of Kido Takayoshi, a key figure in the Meiji Restoration, it is recorded that Emperor Meiji saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time at Shirasuka-shuku during his visit to Tokyo in the first year of the Meiji Restoration.

Onyado Shirasuka

Onyado Shirasuka is a free rest facility that exhibits materials related to Shirasuka-juku, Shiomizaka, and the Previous Hase Residence Ruins that were damaged by the tsunami in 1707. In addition to quizzes and corners introducing the legends of Shirasuka, the facility also has photo exhibitions by local residents in the gallery to please the eyes of those walking the Tokaido.
