Arai-shuku

Arai Checkpoint and Arai-shuku used to be located in the eastern part of the city. They were moved due to the Hoei earthquake in 1707. Many of the streets of post town stations are usually horizontally long, with inns and private houses lined up on both sides of the highway. However, Arai-shuku is divided not only on the highway but also on the back streets with a grid pattern. Since temples and shrines are located at the foot of the mountain, there are areas called temple roads where temples and shrines are lined up, and this town division has stayed the same to this day.
There are remnants of the highway such as the Ichirizuka site and the square-shaped nose along the Tokaido.

Arai Checkpoint Historical Museum

The Arai Checkpoint, which was established at a key point on the Tokaido, is a special historical site with the only surviving Sekisho building in Japan. The Arai Checkpoint Historical Museum displays materials related to Arai Checkpoint and Arai-shuku. The Arai-shuku Hatago Kinokuniya Museum, the Komatsu Building Town Planning Interaction Building, and an old private house are nearby. Please enjoy your leisurely stroll around Arai-shuku.
Although there is a charge to visit the Arai Checkpoint Historical Museum, please inquire at the reception desk if you only want to purchase a post station stamp.
